Lord Beaverbrook High School
A new bike rack
A new bike rack was recently installed at Beaverbrook, just in time for the 2023-2024 school year!
We’re working with the school administration to deliver new bike racks to the school in time for the warmer weather.
Student welders in the school’s welding program updated an old rack borrowed from Acadia Elementary. The addition of the chains means that you don’t have to carry around a U-Lock. Plus, the tire rubber on the chains means that your bike won’t get scratched.
If needed, you can find padlocks in the office to borrow!
Cyclist in Residence success
We worked with Ms. Murphy’s Outdoor Education Class and taught them some cycling skills.
Unfortunately, we picked the one week this fall when it snowed, and that limited our outdoor riding, but we have found ways to work around it.
That is by using the indoor physical education room and the stationery bikes.
Here you can see Rob Crooks saving the day by teaching the students a bike riding lesson indoors. Our Cyclists in Residence are quick to adapt.
Infrastructure Report
Brand new infrastructure report for Lord Beaverbrook High School!
Youth En Route worked very hard in collaboration with two graduate Urban Planning students, Nada Affan and Adam Schwartz to create this report. It offers research findings and actionable recommendations for safer biking infrastructure throughout Calgary. Establishing the right infrastructure is key to creating safe and healthy environments for pedestrians and cyclists. We hope this report will put forward safe biking infrastructure ideas to get to school and spark conversations within communities to make such changes. To know more, read this post!
Theft Video
Theft video into a statement
Youth en Route knows that the risk of bike theft is a significant barrier to students choosing active travel. The risk of theft is the No. 3 reason for not riding to school, having an average of 60% of students telling us they are afraid of losing their bikes per school. We hope that this video will enlighten all Calgarians on the right ways of securing their bicycles.
Always Put Safety First:
Safety is your responsibility. Please ride where you are comfortable, know your route and always wear a helmet!
