Sharing our first Annual Report

Youth en Route recently had its Annual General Meeting to share financial statements and results for our fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2023..

It was a great time to celebrate all that we accomplished, thanks to our funders at Alberta Ecotrust.

While we have created videos that shared our accomplishments each year, for full transparency and to help tell our story, we’ve created an Annual Report.

Evaluating our impact

One of the things we tried to do is share the impact we’ve had across our many programs and interactions with schools and youth. It’s a difficult task. We opted to go in depth at one of our schools, Forest Lawn High School, and then ask readers to extrapolate from there. Our cost per direct interaction with a student was about $23 – but we know that some kids just looked at the “Bike to School” board, or used the bike rack. If you measure all the kids that “could” have been impacted – it’s about $3 per.

And what’s the payback? Hard to measure less traffic congestion, pollution and emissions. Some researchers have quantified a health benefit from bike riding a bike at 32 cents per km. So we calculated our benefit to be about $250 per student.

We think we offer really good value.
